WelcomeWelcome to old guys music. This site is for us older guys and gals who never really stopped being fourteen at heart when it comes to loving music whether you're a musician or a fan. The only difference is these days we’ve got another 35 years under our collective, enlarged belts. Check out the forums and post away and get in touch with others who feel the way you do. If you are an older musician, writer, engineer, producer or music-lover and you are feeling a little like a duck out of water, welcome home! You are not alone. I’ll be adding stuff to the site as people wish including audio gear information and reviews for both listeners and musicians and in the meantime let me know what you would like to see. If you have any problems with the forum, please email me and I'll get things sorted. Welcome! CaseyNews of the DayDuring the past few months I upgraded my studio. I finally retired my old Ensoniq PARIS system and replaced it with Cubase 6.5 with a Lynx Aurora 8 channel converter. The Aurora sounds quite clean and at higher sampling rates it is considerably more transparent than the old Ensoniq converters. I have also been on a vintage monitor kick and acquired a pair of JBL 4430s and had them reconditioned in LA. For those of you familiar with the old JBLs, you will remember that they are next to impossible to mix on but great fun to listen to. These are no different with the exception that the Biradial horn does deliver outstanding imaging. There is still the perennial problem in the lower mids but it’s not a big deal as long as you use your NS 10’s judiciously. I am running them off a Bryston 4B recently reconditioned by Bryston. Man, what an amp! I tweaked the acoustics in the room by mounting absorbent material on the walls adjacent to the JBLs. This process catches early reflections and improves imaging considerably and conforms to the old-school orthodoxy of the ‘dead end/live end’ approach to control room design. Visit my studio site for a peak. You can barely make out the 4430s on the sides but you will get a pretty good look at the Urei 809s. I am now waiting for the arrival of a custom dual 19” rack from Toronto and when it arrives and everything is re-wired I will post new photos.
